Sony’s Shortcuts: Preserve Your Herb Garden with Frozen Herb Cubes and Herb Oil

Hey y’all, and welcome to this week's Sony's Shortcuts!

Each week, I’m sharing one quick kitchen hack from my own life...nothing fancy, just little things that make dinnertime easier, faster, or less stressful.

This week’s tip is going to become one of your favorites that you will use year after year!

Are you growing an herb garden this summer? 🌿 Instead of letting your fresh herbs go to waste, try freezing them in broth or make herb oil! It’s such an easy and convenient way to have fresh herbs ready to go whenever you need them, all year long.

Here’s How to Do It – Freezing Herbs in Broth:

  1. Grab your fresh herbs—basil, thyme, rosemary, sage, and parsley work best.
  2. Wash and dry your herbs, then chop them.
  3. Place the chopped herbs into an ice cube tray. You can combine herbs or use them separately.
  4. Pour broth (chicken, vegetable, or beef) over the herbs, filling each cube to the top.
  5. Freeze and store for later use! These trays work great: https://amazon.com/ChefAide-Ice-Cube-Tray-Lid/dp/B0C1LB9CKH

The next time you’re cooking, just pop out a cube (or two) and toss them into soups, stews, or sauces. Your dishes will be full of that fresh garden flavor—even in the middle of winter!

Here’s How to Make Herb Oil:

  1. Wash and dry your herbs.
  2. Dip them in 80-proof alcohol (such as vodka). This step helps kill any fungus or bugs and extends the shelf life.
  3. Follow the same instructions as above: Chop your herbs and place them in a glass bottle.
  4. Pour olive oil over the herbs to cover them.
  5. Use your homemade herb oil on bread, steaks, vegetables—the options are endless! It will last around 4 months in the fridge.

To freeze herb oil, simply place chopped herbs in an ice tray and pour olive oil over the herbs to cover. Thaw and use all year long!
